Warrior Ethos

A friend asked in anguished tones if I'd heard Pete Hegseth lecture the top brass at the War Department Address in September. So rude! So condescending! Having grown up on Army forts, I'd never seen the top brass get a "rude" dressing down in public, only enlisted men, so I was looking forward to a show.

I got a show, but not the one my friend promised. In sum, Hegseth put the military back on mission, which is to kill our enemies. Harsh? Would you rather they kill you? Probably not.

To be strong enough to protect us, service members have to meet standards. Everyone has to be in shape, no matter his or her job. Social engineering is out. DIs and sharp uniforms are back in style. The War Department has the leaders' backs.

Hegseth's tone was not rude, nasty, or condescending - it was firm, confident, and encouraging. He did say that those who disagreed should do the honorable thing and resign. That makes sense.

If only General Milley could have been there. It would have been wonderful to watch him escorted to the brig.
