Trump's Green Deal
Donald Trump haters are furious about his deal with Greenland. We already have bases on Greenland they shout. Actually we have a base, not bases. One airbase. The same one we've had since 1951.
Why is Greenland important? If you care about the security of your family, take a look at the globe. Greenland is a buffer between the US and Russia, and both China and Russia would love to build military bases on the huge island. They can't now, because Denmark's agreement with the US prevents Russia and China from getting their claws into Greenland.
Americans take note: PBS, no friend to Trump, reports:
". . . I have talked to U.S. and European officials [and] . . . both sides seem to be happy . . . The U.S. can create new bases on Greenland. It can fly over Greenland and it can keep that ability no matter what Greenland chooses for its own political future in any kind of self-referendum . . . it bans non-NATO bases. That means no Russia, no China bases are allowed on Greenland. There's also . . . a screening mechanism for investments. That means no Chinese or Russian investments . . . And, in return, this last point that is really key for Greenland and Denmark, the Greenland population . . . can choose to be independent, which some people on Greenland want to be. And no territory of Greenland is transferred to the United States."
The US stock market likes the deal, too. Does that make me happy? Not really. I'm worried about the effect of a gold rush on the people and environment of Greenland. We don't have a great track record in that area. Let's hope that the harsh climate mitigates the worse impulses of investors. But I am glad that there's less chance that my grandchildren will speak Chinese.
