The Great Divide: Abortion (Revised June 19, 2023)

It’s almost impossible to have a rational conversation about abortion unless you already agree. But America is not in agreement. Those who would let a mother die rather than allow an abortion and those for late-term abortion, even “post-birth abortion,” will never compromise. But we can’t let the extremes dominate. I’m going to follow the advice of Rob Simmons and start by telling you what I don’t support.

Since 2011 there has been a movement to allow infanticide. According to an article in the peer-reviewed Journal of Medical Ethics:

ree

Abortion is largely accepted even for reasons that do not have anything to do with the fetus' health. By showing that (1) both fetuses and newborns do not have the same moral status as actual persons, (2) the fact that both are potential persons is morally irrelevant and (3) adoption is not always in the best interest of actual people, the authors argue that what we call ‘after-birth abortion’ (killing a newborn) should be permissible in all the cases where abortion is, including cases where the newborn is not disabled. 1

This article is not academic chatter. Connecticut and California have proposed abortion laws that are thin wedges. The California law opens the door to infanticide by allowing prosecutors to refuse to investigate the deaths of newborn babies aged 28 days and younger. Considering all the outrageous prosecutors out there, some infants may be murdered with impunity. 2. And we’ve all heard the former governor of Virginia talk about keeping infants who survive late-term abortions comfortable while the parents decide its fate. 3

Satan worshippers have asked the courts to allow them to perform abortions on their altars as a sacrament. Their descriptive verbiage is dressed up in women’s rights language, but it’s a thin veneer for promoting human sacrifice. If legislators adopt laws that allow prosecutors to ignore the deaths of newborns or actually legalize outright infanticide, babies could end up on some of those altars. 4-10

In cases of the life of the mother or the child, the only question is who will die. The mother must decide. If she is unable, that burden falls to her next-of-kin. In cases of incest or rape, it’s horrific that babies would have to die for the sins of their fathers. But if the mother is so distraught that her health is endangered, she or her guardian, in conference with her doctor, must decide.

The majority of us hope that people will use birth control. There are lots of shots, pills, and IUDs. Some women’s bodies can’t tolerate them, and some believe that by preventing the implantation of a fertilized egg, using them is tantamount to abortion. In the 1980s, a coworker with clamped fallopian tubes had the clamps removed and gave birth to a second child. Surgical techniques are much more sophisticated now, so why not clamps for males and females? No muss, no fuss, no chemicals, no fertilized eggs. Boys and girls under 18 would need their parents’ consent.

Although I am against abortion, except to save the life of the mother, I recognize that most Americans will support the six-week heartbeat limit and a majority will accept abortion in the first trimester. The six-week timeline will be difficult for young, inexperienced women, women with irregular menstrual cycles, victims of incest or rape who do not report and get morning after pills, and women not paying attention or who are just irresponsible. A friend suggested that the government should give every menstruating female a free home pregnancy test every month. That would make it more feasible for females no matter which limit is imposed, to have abortions before there is a heartbeat.

If Americans allow abortions for any reason in the first six weeks or first trimester and for the life of the mother, the laws must be very clear and strictly enforced. Abortions must be performed only by licensed, trained medical staff in a hospital.. No rituals allowed. Fetal tissue must be properly disposed of and may not be sold, bartered, or given away. Parents must give consent for girls under 18.

Medical centers should be compensated by insurance or Medicare to provide check-ups, traditional birth control, tubal ligations, vasectomies, and clamps. To remove the profit motive for abortion, hospitals should be minimally compensated for the procedures, and auditors should make sure that they don’t slip charges under a different code.

You are probably dissatisfied with this post. I know that I am. At this point, I feel a bit sick and concerned about the soul of America. So should we all be.

  3. Northam’s discussion is another thin wedge. He talks about deformed babies born alive, but ignores the cause of the deformation. Perhaps a result of surviving a late-term abortion? Severe deformities are usually identified in the first trimester. If not, a severely deformed baby would usually die soon after birth. So what is he really suggesting?
